21 November 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 21st November [1889]. Got up after breakfast. Modelled till 12. The girls went to see the Salute procession. I copied from 12 till lunch time. Henry not very well & did not go out. I went out with the girls. Eda & Nela went to see about the tennis ground. Ola & I to leave cards & try & find flowers for the dinner table without success– Splendid weather & very low tide so that I could not get in at Mrs Bronson’s front door. Long visit from Ct Canevaro just returned from Athens where he commanded the Italian squadron & he told me all about the wedding fetes. He says the reception at sea was magnificent on account of the different squadrons there but the fetes at Athens were not very wonderful. Miss Lawley called & I congratulated her on her engagement to Signor Wiel of the Marciana. Her friend Miss Lawley was with her. Mr & Mrs Joe Chamberlain, Mr & Mrs Curtis, Mr Browning & Mr Pen Browning & Mr Malcolm dined with us. Mr Chamberlain was very agreeable. Mrs Eden & Dr Bird, Miss Barclay came in the evening. At dinner the talk fell upon the price of wages in England & Mr C. told me that from his experience the Englishman who worked less hours for higher pay than the foreigner who worked more hours for less pay—did more & better work & he found it therefore an economy to employ the Englishman & that old Brassey the contractor found it pays to take English navies to France rather than employ the natives.
