3 December 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 3rd December [1889]. Up at 7. Ola in bed with face ache. Worked at bust. Yesterday heard that Mr Browning was very ill. He had not appeared well when he dined with us on Wedy last—complained of difficulty of breathing which he said was “liver”! & went home early but would not see a Dr. After a very bad night on Saty when he had not been able to even get into bed Cini was proposed to him & he accepted his visit with joy, & Dr Cini pronounces he has asthmatical bronchitis & a weak heart & had him carried from his cold room in the mezzanine up on the floor where there is sun. On sending to enquire today we hear he has had a bad night but is better this morning but now there are other complications & he is 76 or more. I did not go out, worked at bust after lunch– Visit from Ct Gabardi & the Pss of Montenegro who stayed a long time. The girls took Pss Olga up into their room– Mr Colnaghi dined & Henry took the girls to Carmen. Cortelazzo & I sat with Ola in Eda’s room & we went early to bed. When Henry returned home he said on enquiry at the Rezzonico the answer was that Browning had been better today but tonight was assai male—wh makes us very anxious.
