11 December 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 11th [December 1889]. Up as usual—but still have a bad cold. Superintended Nela’s painting all the morning. Miss Barclay came from the Rezzonico & said that Browning was still very ill & had been delirious all night—but the family still wished me to send him jelly & beef tea which I have had made by our cook Annie & which is really good and they have an Italian cook who does not understand it. Admiral Deinhardt called & asked us to luncheon tomorrow on board the Leipzig & I told him that on acct of Browning’s illness I cancelled the invitation for tomorrow. Katie Colnaghi left us & returned to Florence to her family. Nela & Henry went to the station with her & we lunched at 2. I did not go out this afternoon but worked at a silk blouse Nela is making. On enquiry Browning is better of the chest but heart weaker. Read to Henry before dinner & finished the 2nd vol of Life of Css Helene Potocki. Went & sat upstairs with Eda & helped her at the blouses in evening.
