12 December 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 12th December [1889]. Woke with a headache in the morning & so did not get up– Miss Barclay came to see me & says Mr Browning tho’ better in some ways is weaker & his heart worse but is quiet. He knew them all & was quite sensible. I went at 3 & got a note from his son Pen to say he was quiet wh was their great consolation—& he said he was much better. The pulse yesterday was 160—today 125. It makes us very anxious & I fear there is little hope– Henry went out with the girls in afternoon. Eda sat with me in the evening & we cut out sleeves of the dress till I shut up for the night.
