13 December 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 13th December [1889]. When my maid Rina called me this morning she gave me a letter from Miss Evelyn Barclay to tell me that it was all over & that Browning had died last night at 10 o’clock. I breakfasted in bed—& Miss B came to see me to tell me about it. She said he had lost consciousness abt 7 in the evening—that just before that his son had a telegram from London to say the whole edition of his new poems had been sold in a day– Pen said “Are you pleased”? He answered “Undoubtedly”– He added “I am dying God bless you” & never spoke again but passed away in his sleep. I feel most sorry for his dear old sister Miss Browning who has been with her brother for so many years ever since his wife’s death. Mrs Orr—Sir F. Leighton’s sister has arrived this morning at 5 & is staying at the Rezzonico—& Pen has telegraphed abt his father’s death & to see if it is wished that he should be buried in Westr Abbey. Browning always said he should come back to die in Italy & in that case wished to be buried at Florence by his wife– I got up while Miss B went over to consult Malcolm & then she returned & took Ola out shopping with her to buy mourning &c. I did not go out today– In the evening at tea had a visit from Mr Moore & also Mr Eliot (Mr Brown’s friend). Read aloud to Henry.
