15 December 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 15th December [1889]. The girls breakfasted at 8 & went off in the sandolo to see the last of the Leipzig & then Ola & Eda met me at church whither I went with Annie. We lunched at 1 & at 2.30 Henry & I & Ola & Eda went to Browning’s funeral service at the Rezzonico Palace in the grand sala on the 1st floor. The coffin was placed in the middle of the room covered with a large satin purple pall & a great many wreaths placed on the ground all round—chairs were placed for those assisting at the service. The family sat just within a side door in the next room– The Sindaco & 2 Councillors—Pss of Montenegro, Pss Olga, the Montalbas, & a few other ladies abt 30 people in all. Mr Jameson read a few prayers & St John XIV chap. as a lesson & we all left—as the coffin was to be taken after dark to be deposited at S. Michele until it is conveyed to England. Henry & I took a walk on the Zattere & there met the Montenegros & walked up & down with them. Ola & Eda went to afternoon service. When we got home Nela told us Browning’s coffin had just gone by on a barge towed by a steam launch & was accompanied by a few gondolas. We had not known [there] was to be a procession or would have sent our gondola– Had tea in Eda’s room with them & then read aloud to Henry. Began “Darwins Journal” very amusing & interesting. Miss Barclay came to pay me a visit & to say that she leaves here tomorrow to return to her mother at Biarritz. She said the Brownings were all well & preparing to leave for England as soon as possible. Mr Brown & Mr Eliot dined with us. Ola played the piano.
