16 December 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 16th December [1889]. I wrote letters & painted & helped Nela to finish her picture. Miss Browning came to see me about 3 & looked very pale & sad. It is a perfect uprooting of life to her. She talked of her brother always in the present tense & said she was going home to destroy all unpublished M.S. he may have left as such was his express wish. She talks of starting with Mrs Orr very soon– Today’s Times has a paragraph to say the Dean has offered a Memorial service in the Abbey—not saying anything about burial there. We hope the family have made no mistake. I took a walk with Nela to buy Christmas Cards. Met the Montalbas in the street & mistook Clara for her sister! Home at 4. Mr Moore called & brought his mandolin to lend it & I left him playing it with the girls & went to read to Henry “Darwin.” Dined at 7.30. Went up with Eda to her room to help finish her blouse– Still splendid weather & not so cold.
