18 December 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 18th [December 1889]. Mr Malcolm was to dine with us tonight but sent word that he was not very well & kept his bed. I wrote Christmas Day invitations this morning. Mrs Brown came to luncheon. Afterwards Henry walked with Eda & Nela. I went to see Mr & Mrs Browning who start tonight for England. They were very busy packing & so I did not stay. She was looking very well—surrounded by packing cases. She took a parcel out of one & said see this is the M.S. of his last book Asolando wh I am taking charge of. Browning’s body left by last night’s train for England in charge of his English servant. Mrs Bronson was with her & Ola & I soon left & went to join Hy at the Piazza. The girls had gone to see Edith Bronson. I brought Henry home & then went to see Mr Eden. I there found Mrs Bronson & we had tea. Talking about old Browning Mrs B. said that lately at Asolo when taking long walks with Browning Edith B. had noticed & been alarmed at the old man’s breathlessness. She told her mother & when one day Mrs Bronson had to come to Venice she called in her homeopathic Dr & described the symptoms & he had given her arsenical globules for him to take—& he had done so for a month & then had seemed quite well—& one day he told her to observe how perfectly free his breathing was. On coming to Venice Mrs Bronson again spoke to the Homc Dr who said he ought stop taking the globules a little while & then begin again but as he was staying with his son she had not cared to interfere again in the matter. I went home & read aloud to Henry a couple of chapters of Darwin till dinner. Idita Bent: dined with us– Played guitar & 2 mandolas in eveng.
