24 December 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 24th [December 1889]. I was so tired I remained in bed till lunch but soon had the bed heaped up with work & books & letters so the only rest I had was to my legs. I remained indoors all day, finished up the costumes. Henry took the girls to the service at St Marks at 5 o’cl & they only returned at 7 in time for dinner. Mr Jameson & Woods came abt 5 & worked at the stage & remained to dinner & Mr Brown also came & dined & then we had a dress rehearsal wh lasted till past 11 & was very amusing. Mr Woods was inimitable & Mr Brown unrecognizable as the Wicked Uncle in the Babes in the Wood. We had 4 pictures of the babes—first the dying mother “Ola” giving over the babes (Nela & Eda) to the care of the Uncle—2nd the Uncle giving over the babes to the 2 robbers—Next—the robbers fight & the babes in terror—4th—the babes dead in the wood.
