2 January 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 2nd January [1890]. Modelled. Practised guitar. Pouring wet day. Went out for an hour to pay calls, but only found the Pss of Montenegro & it rained so I did not stay out. No one came to tea—so had a good long read to Henry. Nela & Eda went to tea with Edith Bronson. Ola was not well & went to bed directly after dinner. Eda & I played guitar & mandolin all evening. There had been 2 moments of excitement last night at the Opera– In the middle of 1st act the Tenor Garulio fainted– Then there came a rumour that an attempt had been made on the life of the King at Rome & the audience called loudly for the Royal March & cheered & made great demonstrations of loyalty & there was tremendous excitement. Today it appears that a man was found putting a machine with a lighted match against the Palace door with intention it is supposed of blowing it up with dynamite. He was pursued by the enfuriated public & his life saved with difficulty by the police.
