7 January 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 7th [January 1890]. Both Eda & Annie better & the latter got up for a few hours. Practised guitar. Wrote, sat with Eda– Dressed & went to the funeral service in our church for poor Mr Truscott who was buried this night & no funeral allowed by the authorities. Henry went at 2 to meet Mr Malcolm at the church to see if the warming apparatus can be arranged as the church is so cold; he then returned for me & we went to Biraghi’s to see how he was getting on with various orders & then were going up the canal to call on Lady Galway who arrived at the Pension Suisse last night when we met her in a gondola—so after a little talk with her we turned back & went home. Cini had been in my absence & says Eda may get up tomorrow. Nela & Ola went with Rina to walk on the Lido– It was a splendid day but very low tide. No one came to tea. In a moment of absence of mind I broke my tea glass which I had had ever since I was at Constantinople & it vexed me very much– Read aloud to Henry Wallace’s Journal. After dinner played duets with Ola guitar & mandola till bed time. Our engagement day 21 years ago.
