18 January 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 18th [January 1890]. Henry remained in bed– Morning papers say that Prince Amadeo, the King of Italy’s brother is ill with inflammation of the lungs & not expected to recover. It appears to us very sudden but he must have been ill some time. I sat with Henry all day—but abt 3 went out for an hour to see Lady Galway who was much better tho’ in bed– The fog was so thick & cold I was glad to get home– Malchie sent word that he offered his Opera box for tonight. I sent to ask him if he would like Ola & Eda himself as I could not leave Henry & he kindly consented to do so. They & I had high tea at 5.30. I read aloud to Henry before & after his dinner. We got an evening newspaper for news of Don Amadeo—& there seems no hope for him. Henry had rather a sleepless night. Thick fog.
