19 January 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 19th January [1890]. Morning papers give the news of Amadeo’s death last night at 7. A good man gone—a gentleman & one more like a knight of old than is often found in these days. He will be a great loss to the King & to his country. The girls tell us that the news was circulated last night while they were at the Opera & that the lights in the Royal box & the Club box were at once extinguished and all the ladies & gentlemen in the boxes left the theatre. I went for an hour out to see Lady Galway & when I returned I found Henry who kept his bed not so well so I sent for Cini who came abt 11 & prescribed for him. I read aloud to him in the evening.
