19 March 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 19th March [1890]. Fine day & the tide was not so high– The 3 girls went to lunch with Css Pisani & I took them there in gondola & went on to try & see Lady Galway to see if I could help about Miss Lawley’s marriage to Signor Wiel for the Church of Rome has forbid any ceremony in our Church & we hear she is very unhappy. Lady G was out so I returned home going first to see Mrs Martin. After lunch we had the mandola band practise from 3 to 4. Henry took out the Bishop & Mrs Sandford to see the Church & the Sailor’s Institute. When our practise was over Edith Bonson took me in her gondola to Css Pisani’s—but as she was out I went on with Edith to her mother’s & then returned home to tea. Two Montalbas came. We dined at 7 & Henry took the girls to the Rossini to hear the “Guramento” & also Lotta, she & the Countess dined with us & old Lady Galway & we had talk & games of patience in the evening & went to bed early. When Henry returned home I was in bed & we were talking & he put his hand on my chest & suddenly exclaimed “Why you have got a hard lump here.” I felt & sure eno’ there it was—not on the same side as last year but the same kind of thing. I said I would send for Cini the next day.
