28 March 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 28th [March 1890]. I got up early & packed all the morning till 12 when we all accompanied Alice on board the “Hydaspes” where Mr Malcolm met us & gave us an excellent lunch with the officers of the ship. I found Lady Butler (Elizabeth Thompson) on board. I had not seen her since she married. She is on her way to Egypt to join her husband. I was glad to make her & Alice acquainted to help each other on their solitary ways as far as Brindisi where Alice joins Hallam on board the “Victoria.” Henry, Malchie & I left the ship at ¼ 2 the girls remained & left at the garden point where they sent the sandolo to wait them. It was the first hot spring day that we had & Venice looked quite lovely. I packed & then had a lot of visitors. Mrs Eden came—& Cortelazzo arrived to stay the night. Went to bed directly after dinner tired out & Eda came up to me & sewed my jewels into a flannel to hang round my neck for the journey.
