14 May 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 14th [May 1890]. Mrs Browning came to luncheon. I had serious talks with the servants especially John who hinted he thought I wanted a second footman. There at I grew furious & said I never intended any one else to settle how I was to spend my own money nor tell me how many servants I should keep & he was speedily squashed. I drove Henry out in the afternoon & we went to Poynters studio to see his picture of the Q. of Sheba before Solomon– A fine picture but not quite finished altho’ he has to send it at once for Exn. I left Henry at the Atheneum & he went on to the Criterion to the Huguenot dinner & meeting at wh he read his annual address. I went to dine at 3 Savile Row with Nelly Alderson & Elizabeth Bertie who are both staying with my brother Monty. Merthyr & Theo went to the Play & took Olivia.
