17 May 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 17th [May 1890]. Visit from Madeleine Trevelyan in the morning. Mrs Alexander Bagot came to lunch & also Ruth. Henry & I called for Mama & drove to the Fan Exhibition at Draper’s Hall in Throgmorton Kent. There were a great many very prettily painted fans. We had great difficulty in finding the one I sent & at last it was discovered in a corner where it was lost. Met there Lord Bristol & his sister Mary Hervey & Signor Smargiassi a Venetian artist gentleman wh paints fans also. Met Louis Du Cane there & brought him home with us. We went to tea with Maria & Mana went to tea with Aunt Felicia in Albemarle St. Walked home abt 6 & then I went to Cavendish Square to see Blanche & only returned in time to dress for dinner. We dined at Mr & Miss Mitchell Henrys at Stratheden House– A large party of 24. Sir E. Thornton took me to dinner & I sat by our host– A young lady (Miss Curiven I think) sang very well in the evening. Fred Layard arrived from the Continent to stay with us in the evening. He has been away for the winter in the South & his family have returned to their home in Cavendish Road & are getting servants & preparing the house for him so we begged him to come to us till they were ready.
