2 June 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 2nd June [1890]. According to Mr Tom Smith’s directions I went off directly after breakfast to consult Sir James Paget but when I got to Harewood Place Hanover Sqr I found he was not to be there until ¼ to 11 so I took a walk to pass the time & returned punctually. I found a gentleman standing at the door & when he turned round I found it was Mr Tom Smith. He said he had come to find Paget & ask him whether I need have Mr Fuller as a 2nd Dr in case I had to have the operation in my breast. I begged him not to trouble so much that altho’ Mr Fuller bored me I did not wish to make a state affair of it & would not like to hurt his feelings and would therefore rather leave the matter. So Mr Smith agreed & left me to wait. Sir James came soon after 11 & after examination he told me he thought I ought to have the operation & that he would see Mr Smith & tell him. So I retired. On the way home I met Sir Alfred Sandison & he promised to come to lunch with us. I then went to 17 Cavendish Sqr & communicated the result of Pagets examination to Blanche & then home. Sir Alfred Paget, Maria Du Cane & Ruth lunched with us. Went driving with Maria & Henry, left him at the Nat. Gallery & went on leaving cards &c. Home to tea & Merthyr arrived by an early train for a few days stay with us but I did not see him till tea time. He wanted me to go to the theatre with him but I was too tired so he took Ola & Ruth. Henry & I walked round to 17 Cav. Sqr & dined there & at Mr Alfred Burton.
