3 June 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 3rd June [1890]. Got up abt 11. Merthyr came & talked in my room before I got up– While I was writing in my studio Blanche came in rather in agitation to say she had talked over my case with Burton after we left last night he being a friend & a surgeon & he was very much against an operation. So I said I would go & see Smith & I went off. However I found that neither he nor Paget had the slightest doubt but that it ought to be done & I said I would be ready next week—& he said he wd send me the nurse, as I find my last year’s nurse Mellett is occupied & I cannot have her. I went home & found Signor Smargiassi waiting for me to talk about a scheme for reviving the fan trade in England. Monty also came to lunch & Sir Wm Gregory looked in & he & Henry went off together to a meeting of the National Gallery. Lady Lindsay called at 3. Monty went off with Smargiassi to see his studio. I asked Ly Lindsay if she would help in the fan revival scheme if it cd be done & she said she would do so. I went for a short drive with Ola, left cards & found Mr & Mrs Foster at home in Gt Cumberland Place. They have a nice house stuffed full of things wh are evidently never used or moved, an omnium-gatherum most funny to behold. Went home to tea. Dined at home alone with Henry & Ola. Merthyr dined out.
