4 June 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 4th June [1890]. Derby Day. Pouring wet all day. I did not get out of doors. Wrote letters in bed– Dr Smith sent the nurse he recommends me to have, to see me & she settled to come in on Saty & the operation is to be on Monday morng at 9. Mrs Rate came to see me before I got up & then Maria so I could only get up in time for luncheon. Fred Layard came to lunch & Luff also. He wanted to tell me all about his eldest son’s coming marriage to Miss Thring daur of the Genl a great match for the Luffs. Considering that Luff pere began life as footman in my father’s family. He came to us when I was 3 months old and rose to be butler, steward farmer & is now agent to some of Ivor’s Dorset property. He married a Miss Burt daur of the owner of paper mill. He has since been elected 3 times Mayor of Blandford where he lives in the Old House & is greatly respected. We are all devoted to him & he to us. Kitty arrived abt dinner time having coming up for the Luff marriage as Cecil is to help to marry them. Mrs Arthur Hanson came up to see me having arrived only today from Consple for 3 weeks’ stay. Maria & Richard & Virginia Du Cane dined with us. Nela was to have come up from Holdenby with Kate but did not arrive so Virgie stayed dinner instead.
