6 July 1890 — Park Gate House, Ham, Surrey
Sunday. 6th [July 1890]. Got up late. Nela & Virgie came from town by train to luncheon. It was a showery day but after lunch the sun came out & I walked with Nela across the common to call on Mrs Scott. She was Mrs Bentwick when I first knew her & her husband was a clergyman & heir to the D. of Portland. They had 3 girls & no son– After his death she married a Mr Scott & he died last year. She was née Barnaby & was very handsome & still is very nice looking. She has a very pretty house there & lovely furniture in it. Her daughter is very handsome also. After sitting talking some time Nela & I walked home & on arriving found a carriage containing my mother, Richard Du Cane & the twins. We sat out under the verandah & had tea. Henry went off to drive to see Lady Russell at Pembroke lodge & took Nela & Virgie to the station for them to return to town. Sat & talked to Mama in the drawing room & had a great discussion about her not keeping her own carriage which she fancies she cannot afford. When Henry returned I took her in our carriage to the White Lodge where we wrote our names on Princess Mary of Teck. It began to drizzle again but I went for a walk in the garden with Richard to talk over the plan for them all to go to Lucerne for the summer & it was just dinner time when we came in. At 9 Mama & her party retired & drove back to London.
