8 July 1890 — Park Gate House, Ham, Surrey
Tuesday. 8th July [1890]. Still showery. Wrote letters & read– Got up at 11. Expected my sister Connie to lunch. She never turned up. Practised guitar & mandola duetts with Ola– It cleared a bit in the afternoon– I sat out in the garden with Henry. Abt 4.30 Mrs Kay & Miss Drummond drove down bringing with them a Mrs & Miss Dawson American ladies, very charming & agreeable. We gave them tea & took turns in the garden– Had an amusing discussion between Henry, Mrs Kay & Mrs Dawson. The latter being a strong conservative & Mrs Kay a red radical for wh Henry teases her unmercifully. We were all full of the strike some of the London police which has been put down with vigour by Sir Bradford—40 of them having been at once dismissed. There was also a slight insubordination among the Grenadier guards on Saty & these things make every one anxious. Things are not in a pleasant state in our poor old country thanks to Mr Gladstone & the demagogues.
