18 July 1890 — Clifton, Bristol
Friday. 18th [July 1890]. A splendid morning to begin with but clouds soon began to come up & it was a steamy heat. I breakfasted with Henry at 8.30 & he went off early to Bristol to join his party of Huguenots. I & Rina went for a walk in the town & came in at 11.30. I lunched at 1 & was going for a drive at 3 when it began to pour so I set to work to practise the guitar. At 5 it was not raining so I went taking Rina with me & we went thro’ a lovely country & to what is called the sea wall where we obtained a beautiful view away to the sea– It rained on & off most of the time we were driving. We saw the College—a fine mass of buildings & as we passed the young men were all out in the field practising cricket. I dined at 8 & then played patience. Henry returned from Bristol at 10 very tired but having had a successful day & especially enjoyed the trip to Blaise Castle & found that Mrs Hosford the wife of the owner was née Bunsen a kind of connection of ours.
