11 August 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 11th August [1890]. Up very early—& found things a little better. The Drs came at 10 & Quain on coming out said “well Lady Layard it is all right.” Sir Henry said “You dont quite mean that, Sir Henry is very ill but Lady Layard need not be very anxious.” Then they talked it over in the drawing room & called me down & said the same thing & Dr Quain said he did not need to come again & they gave their directions. Nurse went to bed & Maria & I took charge of the sick room. Henry was in a high fever, complained of the other side of his chest hurting him, of weakness &c. At that moment Mr Alfred Burton came to call & Henry insisted on seeing him. When he left him & said he was not at all satisfied that I ought to call up nurse & have a poultice at once on the other side & that he thought the lung was affected. This completely upset me– I fetched up nurse. Constance came to see me & Charlie & Bee & the Spanish Ambr Rances who has just been reappointed to the post– Unfortunately I broke down & burst out crying in his face. Connie called upon Sir Henry Thompson to beg him to come sooner than he intended. Henry’s temperature was up to 100º & nurse was alarmed. Sir F. Burton & Fred came to call & I went down to tea—& then Sir H. Thompson came & I went up with him. He assured me that Quain has found nothing wrong with the lungs & that they believed in intercostal neuralgia. Mr Burton came & dined with me & Ola. Sir Henry Thompson & Mr Herring came abt 10 & found the patient improved. Just as he was leaving he asked me if I slept well last night & on my saying no he poured me out a dose of Henry’s sleeping draught sulphurnal & told me to take it when I got into bed. I returned to the drawing room to give the improved acct to Mr Burton & then he left & I went to bed & had a sound sleep. I had taken a drive round the Park with Maria late for a little air.
