12 August 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 12th August [1890]. After a good night I rose refreshed & took my place in the sick room letting Nurse go to bed. Sir Henry Thompson & Mr Herring came at 9 & pronounced Henry somewhat better– The pain in his chest gone & the fear of inflammation of the lungs diminished. All my sisters came during the day to enquire & Sir Henry & Mr Herring came again at 3. Merthyr’s servant arrived in the morng with his luggage, but the servant did not seem to know whether Merthyr would sleep here– We got a room ready for him & Nurse Watson & I occupied the dressing room bed by turns—I by night, she by day. I waited for Merthyr till near 7 when I thought I had better go for a drive as nurse was up again– So Maria & I set off & drove down Bond St. We passed Merthyr in a hansom driving to our house—stopped him & took him into the carriage & he said he would take a drive with us. We drove him down to the Brompton Road where he went to a bric a brac shop. He called me in & showed me a lovely iron work balustrade wh the man said had been found in a cellar near Farnham. He gave me a pretty little table. It was past 8 when we got back. Maria went home & Merthyr, Ola & I dined alone. Sir Henry & Mr Herring came in the evening & were satisfied with Henry’s improvement. Nurse took the night watch. Connie came in the eveng.
