23 August 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 23rd August [1890]. Finished all packing, wrote letters– Sent off Paolo & Rina by 11.15 train to Lucerne with the luggage & Eda went to see them off. We lunched early & left London by the Club train from Victoria station. Eda went to see us off & was to go down to Bournemouth to her family later. We found the compartment reserved for us in the train as my brother Arthur had written to the authorities & Mr Layard Sherperton (I think) godson of a cousin of Henry’s was most attentive. Mr Morgan the traffic manager also came to see us off. We got to Dover at 5 & found a gale had been blowing but we had the state cabin given us in the centre of the ship and we were very comfortable & not the least ill. At Calais we were recommended to the Sleeping Car authorities & had a compartment with 4 beds given us so that we were most comfortable. We got our dinner & breakfast in the Restaurant Car & very good food.
