28 August 1890 — Lucerne
Thursday. 28th August [1890]. Set off from Lucerne by 10.20 train & got a very comfortable compartment to ourselves. Henry not quite so well today. As we passed the St Gotthard it rained heavily & we arrived at Luino in a deluge. Having a lascia passare from Ct Tornielli the Italian Ambr at London we passed the custom house quickly & Henry & I went off in a little carriage to the boat. It was so wet that Henry had to change his shoes as soon as he got on board & that Paolo & Rina appeared with the luggage. There were not many people in the steamer but the cabin was so stuffy we had to remain on deck & managed to get under shelter. The rain held up a little as we got to Baveno at 7.20 & we found a warm welcome from the proprietor Signor Pedretti, a charming room on the 1st floor where I remembered the Crown P. & Pss of Germany were lodged when we met them here years ago when they were happy & he was well. We dined at 8 at the Restaurant & went early to bed.
