1 September 1890 — Baveno
Monday. 1st September [1890]. Breakfast at 9. Dressed afterwards. Fine day but a deal of snow on all the hills round. Worked & read aloud. After lunch took a carriage & drove to Belgirate to call on Mme Cairoli. She was out on the lake & we waited for her. She came in about half hour & was delighted to see us. She had her brother with her & a Sr Ricardi. She gave us tea & talked of her late husband & of his death wh was sudden. We drove back to Baveno by 6. I read & worked. Dined at 7.30 & I wrote letters while Henry played patience.
