20 September 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 20th September [1890]. Nela went out in sandolo before breakfast & brought Pss Victoria home to breakfast with us at 9 & took her home directly afterwards. At 11 I went out in sandolo with Nela. We fetched Pss Victoria & went to the Eden’s garden where H.M. was painting. She asked me to remain with her & sent Css Bruhl back home to look after Pss Margaret who was alone. The Edens arrived at their garden just before we left at 12.30. I accompanied H.M. to the Stabto Venezia & Murano to show her the woman at work on the mosaics, unfortunately they had gone to their dinners. We went upstairs to look at the mosaic pavement wh H.M. admired greatly. We went on to Felici’s studio. He was away but a man had the key & opened it for us. H.M. saw my bust of Portia wh is there. It has been so badly baked that it is cracked. We hurried back to our luncheons. The Empress sent over for us to go out with her at 3 in the gondolas to the Lido. Mrs Arkwright (née Somers Cocks) came to call having just arrived. She brought a cousin Miss Dorothy Somers Cocks. Mr Jameson came to call having at last returned to his flock. I begged him to elect Mr Browning at once church warden & he promised to do so—but I made him sit down then & there & write the notice to put up on the church door as he went home– We all dined at Palazzo Malcolm with Her Majesty. After dinner Lady E. Biddulph came there. The princesses & the Du Cane girls went off to the Piazza to hear the band with Mr Malcolm & Ct Wedell. It is a national fete day today the taking of Rome by the Italian Govt from the Pope. Henry & I came home early. Mr Brown our consul of Genoa dined also with H.M.—a very nice man.
