27 September 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 27th September [1890]. Up as usual at 7. Hot & scirocco. At 11 went in sandolo with Ola to the church practise & undertook to play the harmonium. It was past 12 when we had done. Mrs Browning & Mrs Prinsep were the only others & sang. Ola went to the Eden’s garden in search of flowers & there found the Empress finishing her picture & came home with her. I asked to be sent home in the gondola of the Ste V & M wh I found at the door. I met also Mme Castellani & Mme Cairoli there. We lunched at 1 & at 2.30 Morelli, the girls & I went over to Pal. Malcolm & accompanied H.M. in the steam launch. I had rather a headache & was glad of the air. We went out to the open sea past S. Nicoletto & round the outside of the Lido. The sea air was most refreshing & quite different to that of the canals. We turned back to Venice by the Alberini & landed there– The coxswain told us it was ½ hour’s walk from there to Malamocco so we set off to walk—but found it took us 1½ hour. We searched for 4 leaved clover as we went. I never found one but the Empress found a nest of them & gave them to me & I shall dry them & preserve them. We grumbled, Pss Victoria & I, rather over our long walk for wh we were not quite prepared—but as soon as we got back to the launch & found a good cup of tea waiting for us we were consoled & our good tempers were restored & we did not lavish the abuse we had in store for Ct Seckendorff. It was very soon sunset—& then we had the light of a splendid moon—but we did not get home till past 7. As the Royal party dined with us it was rather a rush to be ready. Besides H.M., Princess Margaret, Ct Seckendorff, Herr v. Wedell, Countess Pisani, Mr Malcolm & our home party. We sat down 14– Our cook distinguished herself– We had chamois & black cock wh Mr Malcolm had brought us from the mountains. After dinner Stella Dyer, Mr Eden & 2 nieces, Brownings, Prinseps &c came in & we had a pleasant eveng. Cortelazzo did not dine but came in in the evening. H.M. stayed till abt 10—the rest till 12.
