30 September 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 30th September [1890]. Directly after breakfast I went over to show H.M. some needle work which I had got for her from Milan. I asked her how she had slept. She said that yesterday was her betrothal day 35 years ago & the moonlight row had so added to her melancholy that she had cried for hours. She gave me a very pretty gold bracelet wh she had had made after an ancient one in the museum at Athens. It has her name Victoria in Greek letters round it—& she said no one else had known that it had the name—not only of her self but of the Queen & Pss Victoria—& I was to wear it for all their sakes. Princess Margaret wanted to go for a walk so I brought her over and changed my dress & I took her & Daisy to Css Pisani. It was a very hot morning—scirocco– We paid the Css a visit, rested—& had iced lemonade & then walked back to the Pal. Benzon (Malcolm) & left Pss Margaret & then were ferried across home. The girls accompanied the Psses to the Arsenal where they had tea with Mme Noce. Css Pisani came to see us at 2 & I went out with her in gondola shopping. I bought stuff for a new foulard dress. We set off to go to the Eden’s garden but when nearly there we saw Henry coming away & gave chase to his gondola & caught him up on the Grand Canal & found him in conversation with Sir James Lacaita who had just made his appearance on the scene. I got into our own gondola & came home with Henry. Css P. dined with us & also Mr Frederick Leveson Gower & his son George (MP). The Princesses came over in the evening & Mr Moore came in—they had a little desultory music.
