14 October 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 14th October [1890]. Richard took Ola, Ruth & Daisy up to Longarone by the 10.50 train. Wrote letters & made cigarettes with Nela. Helped her to place a study to paint. Lady Harriet Hervey & Miss H. came to lunch– Former told us how she came to Venice with her father 60 years ago from Vienna. Two carriages & a fourgon with their luggage. They had gone on to Naples & been robbed by highway men near that place. The brigands had been discovered & the chief got 20 years of prison. Went out in gondola with Mama & Henry. Went to the Eden’s garden & had tea. Splendid weather. Carry picked me a bunch of the first chrysanthemums. Put up flowers on return home. Practised guitar. Nela went out with Rina. Mr & Mrs Dyer & Stella dined with us. The latter played the violin all the evening & her mother accompanied. She played pieces of Saint Saens & Bernard 2 French writers but we did not think them fine. She played also Chopin & Sarasate’s Zapateado & other of his things.
