16 October 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 16th October [1890]. Cloudy day & rained a little. Painted in the morning. Mr & Mrs Newman came to luncheon. They have been here for the summer having taken the Hammonds apartment but we had not seen them to speak to. He is an American artist—she English. The story of their marriage was romantic. She came to Florence with a sick sister & happened to make his acquaintance. When her sister was ill he came constantly to see her & when she died to helped to bury her & make all arrangements—& when the sister who was left was quite alone he asked her to marry him. She was not young but has a fine & intelligent face. Henry went at 3 to see Css Canevaro & then returned for me & mama. It cleared a little but we had to have the felze on the gondola. Went to the Piazza & we all three walked there. Home to tea. Mr Jameson & Miss Fearon & their friend Jackson the organist called. Quiet dinner & patience. Before dinner I read aloud to Henry part of an article in the Revue des deux monde on le Pere des grand Frederic.
