29 October 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 29th [October 1890]. Weather cleared up again. Began to paint the piece of still life with Nela—Indian corn—grapes & a cast of Donatello’s St John. Mama sat with us. Ola was not up & Ruth went to bid good bye to Miss Florence Anderson & the Alwyne Comptons so we had no reading aloud. Lady Hamilton Gordon & her daughter came to lunch. Walter Crane the artist & his wife came to call. They brought a letter from Mrs Ross. He looks like a german student, pale face, long lank fair hair. He has a brown felt hat. He showed us his sketch book & he draws beautifully & with great decision. Mrs Ross tells us in her letter that poor old Kinglake is ill again, that the cancer has developed itself in his throat & ears in spite of having had his tongue removed. Poor dear old man. It is terrible for him alone & at his age—he being over 80. Henry & I took Mama out in gondola. He went to the Stabto, we left cards & came home early. Tea in the drawing room. Mr Moore & Mr Woods called. Mr W. told us that Agnews the picture dealer is in Venice with his family & very low having lost a daughter but that he cheered up while talking with Woods & said he should like to buy one or two of the Academy pictures! We dined at 7 & Henry took the girls to the Opera to see the Elena. Mama & I stayed at home.
