10 November 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 10th [November 1890]. Up at 7. Dark wet day. Painted under difficulties all the morning. Henry & Nela went out after. I read Coryat aloud to Mama in the drawing room whilst Ola & Ruth played guitar & mandola. Henry returned at 9 & as it had cleared a little I went out in gondola whilst he went thro’ the list of cards Mama had bought. I went to see Mr & Mrs Moscheles & found them at home—& paid them a long visit & talked about many things beginning by the society of clever people who led disreputable lives & whether one should encourage & receive them. I contended that it was ones duty to avoid their society, if only out of respect to ones other friends. Mr M. showed me his water colour sketches of which he is doing to illustrate a life of Browning—& others of Venice which seemed to me very beautiful. Also an oil painting by Mrs Moscheles. I lingered on there for an hour—& after I got up to leave Mr M. began to tell me how he was working at the peace arbitration societies & how he found not a soul in Venice take any interest in the subject wh I told him did not surprise me. Mrs Eden came in to call on them & I went off home. Wrote to Mr Clark & Cortelazzo & read aloud to Henry for an hour. Played guitar & mandola with Ola after dinner.
