11 November 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 11th November [1890]. Painted all morning. Girls went to be photographed. Helped Mama to count up her packs of cards. Mrs George Dudley Howe USA came to luncheon & was very amusing. She told us she was a Bostonian & repeated a very funny thing said to her by Mrs Felix Moscheles who told her she thought she could also tell a Bostonian from their look but if she was not sure to ask them if they were New Yorkers & then observed their look! Splendid day—took Mama to the Piazza & into St Mark’s & then went for a little giro in gondola– Back to tea. Henry went out in the sandolo with the girls. Miss Montalba came to call & brought a Mrs Matterson & her daughter to introduce who also brought a letter from Lady Somers– Bss Vietinghoff also came & sat & Mme Noce– I read to Henry for ½ hour. We dined at 7 & he took the girls to the Goldoni Theatre to see the Baruffe Chiozzote– I read Coryat aloud to Mama & we were still at it when the others returned from the Play at ¼ to 12 & to bed.
