27 November 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 27th November [1890]. Found everything thick in snow & a tremendous snow storm still raging when we got up. Mr Dyer came to see Nela & my painting—but I did not paint as there was such reflections. Practised guitar & mandola duetts with Ola, wrote letters. At luncheon Henry said he did not think he was very well he was so cold. He had hot wine & water & I thought nothing of it. Later he came up to my bedroom & he had some hot brandy saying he had got the shivers & then he had some tea at 5 after wh he was very sick & had regular attack of ague & went to bed. I was going with Sophy to tea with the Edens but I sent her alone. Sent to ask Mr Malcolm to take Ola & Nela to “Carmen” as Henry had taken a box wh he gladly consented to do– Sophie & I sat in the studio in the evening that I might be near him & look after Henry. I sent for Dr Cini who came about 10 & ordered quinine tomorrow morning.
