5 December 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 5th December [1890]. I & Nela painted. Ola went to Mme Noces to practise mandola with her & stayed lunch there. Dr Nevin the American clergyman at Rome & Mr Jameson lunched with us. Sophie went for a walk with Nela to visit the protestant school in Canareggio. I went with Henry in gondola to the Piazza—left some cards & came home to tea. I had retired to my room to write some letters. Henry was working in his room with the help of Miss Holas when Sophie came up calling to me to go down at once because Princess Victoria of Prussia was there– We all rushed down & fell into her arms & embraced & screamed for joy. She & Prince Adolf her husband had arrived this afternoon from Vienna & had come off at once to take us by surprise. After talking for some time they went off & said they would return after dinner wh they did. Mrs & Edith Bronson dined with us & no one else as Mrs Bronson is in deep mourning. The P. & Pss did not stay very long as they were tired having travelled all last night. She told Nela she was very happy now she was married she found out every day more & more what a good kind man P. Adolf was & she was getting to appreciate him more & more.
