17 February 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 17th February [1891]. I did not get up till lunch time feeling very exhausted after the bad day I had yesterday. I went out with Henry to call on Pss Hatzfeldt who had been wanting to make Henry’s acquaintance all the winter—& several times when we had settled to go to her the visit had to be deferred on acct of his or her health. She a lovely old lady with white hair, bright eyes & an aquiline nose. She is tall & slight & dresses perfectly to suit her age & very becomingly with a close fitting Marie Stuart cap of soft grey tulle—a high ruff-like collar lined with grey plumes. She is unfortunately very deaf but manages very cleverly by applying to her ear an instrument like a half closed fan in wh are concealed tubes conveying the sound. She has 3 pictures by Lembach—one of her daughter Css Wolkenstein—rather pretty—one of her self a hideous thing & quite a caricature & one of Mme Action who committed suicide. It is powerful but totally unlike the delicate little women he pourtrays. He had made a despairing large boned Magdalen. We met an elderly Bss Schleinitz whom the Princess says is a very learned person. She is a spinster & her appearance is singular. We went on to the Piazza took a little walk & then went to the Edens to tea– There I broke down & had a fit of crying & thereby disgraced myself. Came home & read aloud to Henry. Nela went with Olga Montenegro to tea with Marie Lucchese Palli. Dined at 7.30 & had the guitar & mandola band practise in the evening. Dss della Grazia & Marie, Mme & Mlle Stefani & Edith Bronson came.
