21 February 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 21st February [1891]. Still lovely weather but frost at night. I painted at Nela’s portrait till 12 when she went off to lunch at Mr Eden & go out with him in his new steam launch. I sent for Cini to see if he could give my any remedy for my terrible headaches. He came at 3—said he would think of it & put me on a regime when we return from Vescovana where we are going on Monday. Malcolm also came to consult me about a new stair carpet for his house when H.M. is here & showed me patterns from Florence. At 3.15 Henry & I went out in gondola– He walked in Piazza while I went to see Idita Bentivoglio & also to see Mr Jameson to offer him to bring his little girl to our house as she has a relapse & high fever & I fancy his house is not over healthy. Then went to fetch Henry at the Piazza & leave his card on the Duke of Genoa– Picked up Nela at the Edens & brought her home—& then I went to Css Papadopoli whose “day” it was & found a crowd there—the room rather dark—men smoking & a great heat. It was like a party—of course one saw nothing of the hostess– I did not stay long—came home to tea & found Ct Lanckoronski calling– Later came Mme Facci, the Dr’s wife a pretty little woman & then Css Andié Mocenigo & Lord Ashburnham—who has been some days at Venice on a visit to D. Carlos. He was very pleasant & stayed some time. Dined at 7– Edith Bronson dined with us & Pss Olga Montenegro. Henry took her & Nela to hear the Puritani in Malcolms box. The Dss della Grazia & Marie & Mme & Mlle Stefani came at 9 (& Trombini) to the guitar & mandola practise & left just before 12–
