24 February 1891 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Tuesday. 24th February [1891]. First breakfast in our bed rooms—lovely day. Was practising the guitar in my room when Nela ran in saying Ola was feeling faint. I went to her & brought her round & got her into my room on my bed. When she was better the Css installed her on a sofa in the hall & there she remained till she was better in the afternoon. We lunched at 12 & at 2 went for a drive—Henry & Nela in the open carriage & Mother Vittoria (the Css) & I in the brougham. It was a splendid day & the sun very powerful. Took a turn in the garden with Henry on our return from seeing three farms. Henry went to the bedroom to read & I went to tea in the hall. I was sitting quietly talking to mother V. when Henry opened the hall door & called me out. I heard by his voice that something was wrong & I found he was shaking with an ague fever fit. I lit the fire & covered him warmly—gave him hot brandy & water but he was very unwell & light headed. D. Antonio was out gone to meet Mlle Giacomelli at Rovigo who was coming to stay here. They arrived about 7 & then D. Antonio went to see Henry & ordered him lemonade—& took his temperature wh was 39.5º. Henry had been looking over old despatches abt the massacre of S. Bartholomew with D. Antonio today and he chaffed him & said he was sure he had poisoned him to get rid of another Huguenot! & even in his fever was very funny.
