27 February 1891 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Friday. 27th February [1891]. Breakfast in our rooms & appeared at 12 o’clock lunch. Afterwards Ola & Nela went for a drive to a wood beyond Este & returned abt 6 with a splendid basketful of snow drops—hepatia & French fern– I went for a drive with Mother Vittoria the usual round of the farms & she expostulated with the men for keeping the cattle shut up in this fine weather & ordered them to be turned out. We went as far as the Palazzo Rosso & began the preachment there—the people seem stupid & obstinate in these parts. Henry walked in the garden & we met at tea. After dinner Henry got a telegram from Mr Brown at Venice saying that Mr Jameson our chaplains little girl Octavia was dead & asking if the Presbyterian might do the service. We were greatly shocked. She was a pretty & fascinating child of 8 & a great pet. The child had had fever more than a month & our surprise had been that Mr Jameson had not seemed more alarmed abt her. Ola & I played some guitar & mandola duetts in eveng.
