7 March 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 7th March [1891]. Had breakfast in my room & went off by the 9 ocl train to Vicenza to pay Cortelazzo a visit. I got there very comfortably at 10.30 & he met me there in his brougham & drove me out to his villa. Gave me a cup of coffee & walked me round the estate– His wife was ill in bed & I sat some time with her—& abt 12 Cortelazzo & I had luncheon together– I sat again with his wife & talked a great deal—took a little walk & abt 4 he took me to the station to catch the express from Milan by wh Ivor & Cornelia were to arrive at 5.17. I found them luckily as they did not look out for me & did not expect to see me– We wrote to them to Milan but they had not stayed there. We reached Venice at 6.35 & found the gondola waiting & came home– Dined at 8 & went early to bed. I found Cortelazzo well but feeble in the legs. He tells me he is 71 but he is very infirm for his age—& he cannot walk on smooth pavements without help from some one else– It is a great deal nerves & from acids used in working his art.
