8 March 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 8th March [1891]. Cornelia & I went to church in gondola. Ivor walked with the girls– Slight fog wh cleared as the day advanced. After church took Cornelia a little walk to see the streets of Venice. I had a long letter from Empress Fredk expressing her sorrow at Morelli’s death wh she feels greatly. She also refers to her stay at Paris & says that there was no pretext for all the fuss made by the Press—[illegible words] & she laments the power of the mischief makers who are all powerful & of whom the Govt is afraid. After lunch Henry, Ivor & Cor: & the girls went out. I remained at home– Edith Bronson came to see me. She & her mother leave tomorrow on a visit to Rome. The rest of the party returned to tea. Idita Bentivoglio & Olga Mocenigo came to tea– Dined at 8. Ola played the piano in evening.
