11 March 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 11th March [1891]. Pouring wet day. Sat in the green boudoir with Cornelia. Ivor went to call on Mr Malcolm & then came back for Cor: & me & we went together to Clerle’s at the Piazza Manin & looked thro’ his bric a brac & then returned home to luncheon. Directly after lunch we went out again in gondola & Henry with us to Richetti’s shop & there saw 2 splendidly bound books– They had the stamp of the Colonna family in them– They had been given by Pope Gregory XV to Louis XII & had the portrait of the king on the binding. The book itself was not an interesting one. I forget what it was—but I remember it was Latin. Saw also a pair of arms covered with silver plaques to [illegible words]. We brought Henry home—& then I left Ivor & Cor: at Rietti’s shop & went on to the Montalbas to see Clara Montalba’s picture for this year’s academy. A view of the piazza &c from the sea with the coloured bissoni wh come out on royal occasions. I did not care very much for it, it appears to me manieré. Her sister Ellen had a very pretty portrait of a girl carrying a large bunch of yellow & red zinias. I returned to pick up Ivor & C & we went to tea with Mme Wiel—still a deluge of rain– Home by 6. Read aloud to Henry. After dinner went to Princess of Georgia’s ball Ivor, Cornelia & I & the girls. There was a minuet costumé– We got there at 10 & the minuet did not begin till 11.30. It was very pretty—& fairly well danced, the mens costumes were very good—being all the property of different Venetian families who lent them for the occasion.
