8 April 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 8th April [1891]. Up at 7 & had our tea. Practised guitar & before breakfast at 9. I painted till 12 & resumed my own portrait. Practised duetts with Ola for an hour before luncheon at 1.30. Visit from the Bentivoglios who brought B. & Bss Hierschel to make our acquaintance. He is conseiller d’Ambassade in London now. They are Jews. Seem very nice people– Henry & I went to the H. Britannia & called for Isabel Somerset—& took her to see the Carpaccio of St Giorgio Schiavoni—then we left Henry at the Piazza & I took her to Rietti’s, Moses of the Tower where she bought some furniture & almost decided to take the fittings of the Chemists shop “A la Madonna” wh had once been at the Campo S. Bartolomeo– We went over the Palazzo Rezzonico & then I brought her home to tea– The O’Conors came also to tea– Ola & Nela took out Isabel’s boy in the sandolo. At 9 Henry, I & the girls went off to the Princess of Giorgios where she had a stringed quartette concert—not many people. We hear that Lady Colin Campbell—celebrated in the Divorce Court has decided to come & live at Venice which fills us with dismay. It is really to be regretted that those sort of people should come here where the society is so small it is almost impossible to avoid knowing them.
