21 April 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 21st April [1891]. Had hardly any voice & could not read aloud today. Lunched at 1—& went at 2.30 to the Palace to have an audience of the Duchess of Genoa– Her lady is Countess Ricardi & she was very polite. Mme Rombo was also there on the same errand & went in when I came out. The Princess is tall thin her hair almost red & her complexion a dead white. She was very polite & talked much & fast (in French) but with out looking one in the face. She has the “Hapsburg” type of face & even reminds me of Velasquez portrait of the little Infanta in the wide skirts– On the way home I called at Mosè Rietti’s to see if Emily Talbot was there but not finding her I came home & fetched Henry & we went to leave some cards. I was obliged to come home to rest being quite voiceless. Had tea in my own room. Mlle Cozzi came there to see me & sat some time. We dined with the D. & Dss della Grazia & found that the latter had also got extinction de voix & so we cracked at each other all the evening. They had a few intimate friends there in the evening.
