22 April 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 22nd [April 1891]. I worked at my own portrait retouching &c Voice recovering. After lunch went with Henry to call on Css Canevaro by appointt & to bid her good bye– Found her much calmer. We had a great shock today seeing in the Times the sudden death of our kind friend Sir Alfred Trevelyan. We are sorry for his family—they were so attached & shall miss him much. He used to come & see me 2 or 3 times a week in London in the mornings. As he lived in Harley St & we in Q. Anne St he passed our door on his way back from Covent Garden when he went for flowers & he never failed to bring some for me– He was a ’verted R.C. & not very happy over it & said to relieve his mind to us with abuse of the Pope or R.C. Bishops. His was a simple & loveable character & he was a good friend. The eldest daughter Pauline is just engaged to be married—so happily they have a man now to help in the family—wh consists of wife & 5 girls—all devoted to each other. At 4 o’cl we returned home & had our musical party—trios & quartettes—& there was universal regret that it was the last. The Edens, Curtis, Montenegros, Montalbas &c came. It lasted till nearly 9. Dined at ½ past & Henry & Ola went on the Piazza. Nela & I took early to our beds.
