13 May 1891 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 13th May [1891]. Blanche’s children came to see us in the morning. Drove out with Henry. Called on Maria & Henry waited there while I went to the dentist. Nela drove with us. When we returned found a letter from Mr Beaufort saying he had a telegram from the Fred Layards saying that Frederick was very ill & asking Mr B. to meet them at Paris. As Mr B. was also ill he had sent to Arthur Layard who had started last night & they were all to arrive at Vict. Station at 7 this evening. Henry had to go to the Huguenot meeting and dinner so I said I would go in the carriage & meet him. Had tea at home & at ¼ to 7 I went off in the carriage to the station. The train was late & did not come in till 7.45. I was horrified to see Frederic when at last he was pulled out of the train. He could hardly stand nor speak—& could not move a step. We got a bath chair & wheeled him to our carriage & got him in with difficulty & his son Arthur got in with me & we drove off at once. He seemed terribly weak & wandering in his head—& Arthur said he would take little nourishment. He said himself he was very ill & had longed to return home sooner but that his wife & daughters could never make up their minds. Arthur said he had been taken ill at Nismes & the French Dr had hurried them home– They left me at home & drove off to 3 Cavendish Road together. I had a few moments only to dress & go off to 17 Cavendish Sqr where I was dining with B & Edward. Met Sir Herbert & Lady Maxwell & Mr & Mrs Crips. Henry joined me after dinner & brought me home.
