21 May 1891 — Paris | |
Thursday. 21st May [1891]. I awoke with a horrible headache & could not get up. Henry went to breakfast at 12 with the Dreyfus. Blanche & Edward lunched at the Rest. with Dacre & they all met at the Exhibition buildings at the Champs de Mars & saw the exhibition of French furniture. Then Henry joined Mrs Dyer & Stella at 112 Bd Malesherbes at Sarasates to make his acquaintance & to hear him play a trio with Mme Marx & M. Dalassert the cellist. Towards 3 my maid Rosa came to me with a telegram which proved to be from Arthur Layard to say that Frederic had died at 9.30 this morning. There was a tremendous storm just at this moment one heard shouting & screaming in the street & Rosa said the wind was so sudden & violent that horses were stopped in the street & there was a deluge of rain. I sent out Rosa to order my mourning dress as soon as the storm abated. Blanche & Edward came in a little after 4 & I gave them tea in my room & we made all arrangements to return to London tomorrow as the funeral is to be Saty. Henry did not return much before 6 when I conveyed the bad news to him. Mrs Dyer came with him & I sent to ask her to come up & see me—& asked her to do some commissions for me when I was gone. She offered to go with Blanche to the bonnet shop & they went off & ordered me also a bonnet. Henry, Dacre & Blanche & Edward went at 7 to dine at the Tour d’Argent where there was a dish made “a la Sir Henry Layard” for them. I was a little better & got on to the sofa—& read till 10 when they returned home. Packed. | |
